Artist's Statement about the 2017 Calendar, by Alma:
The concept for the 2017 lunar calendar came to me in full in the twilight hours after I was asked to create it. In my mind۪s eye, I saw the circle, the moons exploding from the center like a sunburst, the symbol-covered serpent encircling them, and sacred plants adorning the corners (although I didn۪t yet know which symbols or which plants). The creation of this image coincided with a significant phase in my own spiritual journey. Themes, myth, and symbols that emerged and held great meaning for me, have been woven into this image as a pronouncement for the coming year. I regard the creation of this image as a sacred act, similar to sewing stories into the patches of a quilt or brewing a healing elixir of magickal ingredients. It is my intention that all who welcome the calendar into your space would encounter and engage with the following themes in 2017 in powerful, life-giving ways.
About the symbols:
CIRCLE- the wheel of the year, image created in such as way that the user must rotate the piece, as a tactile reminder of the turning of the wheel, the passage of time
SERPENT- encircling the calendar as a protector and a pronouncement that 2017 would be a year of rebirth & transformation
APPLE- hidden knowledge/hidden power
SERPENT in relationship to APPLE-LILITH: According to myth, Lilith was the first wife of Adam. Unlike Eve, Lilith was made from mud, from earth, just as Adam was. She was his equal. Lilith was thrown from the Garden because she would not become subservient to him. She would have no masters. Lilith۪s themes are rebellion, liberation, unabashed pleasure, courage, wildness, exuberant sexuality, and an unbridled spirit. She was master of her own body and her own destiny. Lilith was the rebel, the nasty woman, and some regard her as first witch. In some versions, the serpent that tempts Eve is Lilith. I imagine, in this act, Lilith inviting Eve to awaken to the awareness of her own power.
SYMBOLS on SERPENT:
26 Symbols- 26 or 8 (2+6) can represent cause & effect, karma, or building.
The symbols from head to tail:
15. CHALICE/CUP (INTUITION)
16. SWORD/ATHAME (DECISIVE ACTION)
18. WAND (CREATIVE POWER)
19. CAULDRON (TRANSMUTATION)
20. BROOMSTICK (SPIRITUAL TRAVEL)
3 sides-SPIRIT/MIND/BODY & LIFE/DEATH/REBIRTH
Negative space triangles-YONI (literal/figurative) creative energy, sexuality, power
Dark triangles-CAVE retreating into the quiet, still, dark, introspection
SPIDER-The POWER of CREATIVITY. Weaving dreams into reality, spiraling, linking past/present/future & spinning infinite possibility. 8 legs-again 8 symbolizing the act of building something of meaning
4 PLANTS: (from bottom left, counterclockwise)
1. MUGWORT- Air Element- associated with the moon, enhances dreams (especially dreams with a message), visions, clairvoyance, psychic travel
2. CHAMOMILE- Water element- healing, peace to body/mind, rest, aid to meditation, understanding in confusion (especially spiritual)
3. ELDER-Air element- Associated with regeneration b/c of how quickly it grows from any part planted. Wood used for wands. Elder used in death/dying rites, crone work, protection, wisdom, divination. Elderberry is immune strengthening but raw it is toxic (The idea of poison/medicine).
4. LAVENDER-Air element- purification, rest, clarity of thought, harmony
Final Note: The Lilith myth, the plants, and all of the symbols have a multitude of different meanings, uses, traditions, and variations. I am mentioning here only the aspects with which I was engaging in the creation of this piece. Each can carry entirely different meaning for different users. Therein lies the beauty of symbol! I welcome you to explore and engage with these symbols in the ways that speak to you. (I۪d love to hear back about that process too!)
About Moon Calendars:
Lunar Calendars show what phase the moon is in every day of the year, so the idea is that you can chart your menstrual cycle (or other life cycles) with the moon, which is on a 28 day cycle like a menstrual cycle. Before the age of electricity, people bled with the new moon and ovulated with the full moon. Every body is unique and the lunar calendar is simply a tool that can work for anyone to notice how these (all) cycles are interrelated as our ancestors did.
The new moon, or the dark moon, is symbolic of new soil- a time to plant seeds and intentions for the 28 day cycle ahead, and as the moon grows (waxes), the seeds grow and our intentions begin to manifest in some way.
The full moon represents the fullness or completion of whatever was planted during the new moon- a time to celebrate or notice what has peaked. As the moon wanes and her light diminishes, the cycle comes to a close and we let go of the current cycle to prepare for the next. Our ancestors have used the moon as a guide in this way for thousands of years.
