Compostable Dish Sponge
Compostable Dish Sponge
Hemp + Organic Terrycloth + Sea Sponge pieces inside, that’s it…
Did you know that the average (synthetic) dish sponge is 200,000 times dirtier than a toilet seat??? Nasty nasty nasty indeed. Part of the problem with the average dish sponge is that it is made of materials that hang onto bacteria- plastics and dyes and all kinds of problematic materials.
This sponge is different. THIS SPONGE is made entirely of plant based, natural materials, from the sea sponge filler to the unbleached terrycloth top side & 100% cotton (bottom) exterior layers. Sea sponges are NATURALLY antibacterial and antimicrobial, and the sponge matter used in these comes from a US-harvested & sustainable source.
Each sponge is hand-sewn and packed here at our workshop in northern California and measures approximately 4" x 2.5". It can be cleaned with soap or by soaking in hot water combined with either vinegar, baking soda, or with a few drops of essential oils. It can also go in the dishwasher or washing machine. It will last a lot longer than your typical counter sponge and stay cleaner in the process.
We are women-owned, women-run, and we work hard to reduce waste and make sustainability fun and manageable.
A little story behind this kitchen sponge...
Janeen, owner of Holy Sponge, started this business in order to reduce waste and reduce the amount of toxic landfill trash Americans produce every year. After she saw footage of the great Pacific Garbage Patch over 15 years ago, she was determined to keep as much trash out of oceans and out of the earth's soil as she could.
One area where she had trouble reducing landfill trash was her menstrual cycle (not a fan of the cup), so she started using sea sponges on her period, which are reusable, compostable, and wayyy cleaner than commercial tampons. They are naturally antimicrobial and antibacterial. She loved using sponges for her cycle so much that she started selling Moon Ritual Kits.
In trimming sponges for each kit, she built up quite a heap of small sponge pieces. Determined to not waste anything, she made this dish sponge. And in using it, she has become convinced that it is the best damn sponge she's ever used. And now everyone who has tried it so far is in agreement...We hope you'll give it a go and see for yourself!
